Origins of Service Birmingham

Public sector ethos; private sector know-how

Service Birmingham is the partnership between Birmingham City Council (BCC) and Capita, set up in April 2006 to support the council in changing the way it works, using information communications technology (ICT) to pave the way.

As a joint venture, we are overseen by a board with members from the council and Capita. We are two-thirds owned by Capita and one third by the council. A proportion of any profits from the partnership goes into a staff benefit scheme.

Birmingham City Council is the largest local authority in Europe. Its vision for a world class ICT service supports its broader agenda to improve the services it delivers for the citizens of Birmingham.

Capita is the UK's leading provider of business process outsourcing and integrated professional support service solutions.

Service Birmingham is a union of the best of public and private sector, or as we like to describe ourselves, a private sector company with a public sector ethos.

"Together we are providing better ICT for our employees and improved services for citizens through a range of customer enhancements. These include a more streamlined contact centre for enquiries, enhanced online services through our website and a more personalised service for people with improvements in Adults, Housing, Children's services, Constituencies and Environment.

"The council's ICT is one of the best when compared to other local authorities."
